Errors in the use of Pronouns

Errors in the Use of Pronouns:

Pronoun are those words that can replace a noun in a sentence.

1.  Usage of Reflexive Pronoun: The reflexive pronouns (ending in-self) are used when the action denoted by the verb is directed toward the thing referred to by the subject. Some examples are : Myself (Singular), Yourself (Singular), Yourselves (Plural)  and Ourselves (Plural)

Example:  They enjoyed them during birthday party. (Incorrect)

They enjoyed themselves during birthday party. (Correct)

2. Good manners require that ‘singular pronouns’ should be in second person, third person, first person (231) order. But in plural, ‘we’ is used before ‘you’, that is, 123 order - first person, second person and third person. Order (123) is followed while referring to unpleasant acts.

Example: You and I will be punished. (Incorrect)

I and you will be punished. (Correct) because : In sentences with unpleasant act, so 123 order will be followed.

3. When two subjects joined by As well as, Together with, Along with, And not, In addition to, Like, Unlike, With, Rather than , Except, No less than, Nothing but etc.  takes helping verb and possessive pronoun as per first subject.

Example: I together with Mansi and Tara are going to market tomorrow. (Incorrect)

 I together with Mansi and Tara am going to market tomorrow. (Correct)

4.  Use of words ‘Either’ or ‘neither’ is done in speaking of two persons or things; ‘any’, ‘no one’ and ‘none’ is used in speaking of more than two.

Example:  Anyone of these two roads leads to the railway station. (Incorrect)

Either of these two roads leads to the railway station. (Correct)

Neither of these three boys did his homework. (Incorrect)

No one of these three boys did his homework. (Correct)
